Update your theme
You can verify if your theme is up to date by clicking the version number in your Shopify Admin.
When your theme is on the latest available version, you will see a green check mark icon with the status This theme is up to date.
When an update for a theme is available, you will see a notification to update your theme. Click Add to theme library to add the updated version to your theme library or View release notes to read about the new release.
Any customizations made to your theme using the Theme Editor will be copied over and applied to the updated theme. These include:
- Theme settings
- Page layouts, including sections and blocks
- Section and block settings, including images, videos, text, and data sources
- Custom page templates
- App embed settings or app extensions
- Translations that were modified using the Language Editor.
Depending on the size of the theme and your internet connection, some themes need several minutes to complete the update. When the process is finished, the updated theme will have a Just added badge in the theme library and the title will be prefixed with “Updated copy of”.
If you or an installed app made any code changes to your theme, these won’t be included in the updated version. If you want to keep these changes, then you need to manually copy your code to the new version or reconfigure apps that made code changes.
Code changes include:
- Manual code changes to your theme files through the Code Editor (except files in the
/templates
folder andsettings_data.json
). - Code changes that an app installed on your store has made to your theme on your behalf.
After the updated theme has been added to your theme library, read the release notes, and preview your online store to ensure it looks and functions as you expect. When you are ready, Publish your theme.
